TURKISH PROFICIENCY EXAM (TYS) INTRODUCTION
The Turkish Proficiency Exam (TYS) is a language proficiency test developed by the Yunus Emre Institute in accordance with the proficiency definitions specified in the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages." It aims to measure the reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills of individuals learning Turkish as a foreign or second language. Since 2013, it has been administered simultaneously three times a year on an international scale in Turkey and in all countries where Yunus Emre Institutes are located.
The Turkish Proficiency Exam (TYS), developed by the Yunus Emre Institute, has received the ALTE (The Association of Language Testers in Europe) Quality Mark (Q-mark), making it the first internationally recognized language exam for Turkish. It is of great importance to measure and evaluate individuals' competencies in Turkish reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills using valid and reliable assessment tools. With TYS, the internationally recognized standard exam for Turkish, it is also aimed to standardize Turkish language teaching across different institutions abroad. Besides increasing foreign students' interest in Turkey, TYS is highly significant in facilitating the acceptance of these students' academic and job applications and ensuring they are evaluated on a more solid basis.
The TYS is conducted in three sessions. The sections in the 1st and 2nd sessions (reading, listening, writing) are administered as group exams, while the section in the 3rd session (speaking) is administered individually for each candidate. The 1st session lasts for 105 minutes, the 2nd session for 60 minutes, and the 3rd session for 15 minutes, making the entire exam last a total of 180 minutes.
Successful candidates are awarded a Turkish Proficiency Certificate at B2 and C1 levels based on their scores. The Turkish Proficiency Certificate, bearing the ALTE Quality Mark (Q-mark), holds the distinction of being the first internationally recognized language proficiency certificate for Turkish.
Candidates possessing the Turkish Proficiency Certificate are exempt from attending the Turkish preparatory class when they gain admission to study at any institution in Turkey. Additionally, the Turkish Proficiency Certificate is required for foreigners wishing to work as Turkish teachers, tour guides, or translators. The Turkish Proficiency Certificate provides individuals with a major advantage in job applications.
